I've finally fount a compatible printer for Windows 98, a DeskJet C but they don't have the driver. However, this still does not solve the problem. One alternative would be to print "odd numbered pages" first, reinstall the paper facing down and then print "even numbered pages.

If you are using a 64 bit version of Windows 7 there is not a solution at this point, the supplied drivers have an issue. It's worth a thousand words. The printer gets redetected, even though it is installed and working already.
